After years of speculation that this day would eventually come, it appears Amazon is now blocking various 3rd party apps on Firestick/Fire TV devices. 3rd Party apps are applications that are not available within the Amazon App Store and must be “sideloaded” for use on these devices. These can be installed via the Downloader App…

TDUk just uploaded a video today describing Amazon’s latest update to Fire OS 8. This update is suppose to eventually block the streamjng of 3rd party apps. Good thing I already have my 2nd ONN 4K Pro. Will move to ONN once my firestick completely stops streaming my apps.

If they are pressuring Amazon to do this you know they sure as hell are pressuring Walmart and the ONN Boxes are probably next. How ironic that soon we will all be using Cheap China Boxes  :grinning: :joy:

It’s about the Benjamins $$$.
According to Luke at cord cutters news, 60% of all streaming (devices) is done on ROKU. The lion’s share of ad revenue goes to ROKU.
Amazon wants to be ROKU

If you can’t control what people watch, you can’t control what ads they see !

That doesn’t work for me. That setting was already off on my 1st gen 4k. Two of my apps were blocked by Amazon - FlixVision and LiveNetTV. Both of these apps require users to allow use of your CPU and bandwidth by the developers and I think this is what Amazon is catching them on. As of this morning, my Firestick 4kMax (2nd gen) wasn’t having this issue so it may just be an issue with OS6 devices. EDIT: Well, Amazon has now blocked those two apps on my 2nd gen stick and 4kMax 2nd gen stick also. So I guess we are SOL!

I did get Flix Vision to work on the Firesticks by disabling Google Play. If I leave Google Play enabled, it will disable Flix Vision after a few hours.

I know it last night max2 can’t be adb so when it updated it was a large update. First thing I see is no more third-party apps time for my second ONN box hopefully they will come out with a work around . Otherwise time to smash them

The flix Vision app was doing nefarious things. I didn’t use the app much but was getting notifications for the last month or two that it was running in the background. I forced a stop it should have never ran again but it did. I used the app a couple of times I did like their layout but didn’t like how you had to move the cursor around. I uninstalled it. Hopefully Amazon doesn’t do this to the rest of them I have. This is all on my second gen cube.

Do you mean disabled Play Protect in Play Store or disabled the Play Store?

Edit:
Oh wait… you dont use play store in Firesticks right?

I’m confused too @sktn77a .

I have Google Play Store ‘Disabled’ and if I ‘Enable’ it…Flix Vision will be ‘Disabled’ by Google Play Store. I tried this on the Nvidia Shield TV, ONN 4K Plus and the Firestick with the same result. I no longer use Firestick but that was the case when I did.

Gotcha. Yeah disabling Play Protect should keep it from being deleted by the Play Store on the Onn and Nvidia.

I guess the confusion was disabling it on the firestick. I dont remember the Firestick have the Play Store. But i havent used a FS in years.

You are right, I also have Nvidia Shield, I have disabled ‘Play Protect’ on Google Play, it was blocking some apps since last year. So Play Protect has been disabled since then. Every app I download is fine now.

I guess we really need to see and understand exactly what the motives of Amazon are?

If there’s merely a few apps they are blocking because they are truly dangerous and/or have malware, etc, for me, I actually like this move.

But if they intend to systematically remove all sideloaded apps, of course that is a very serious issue.

I’m looking for an alternative to the Amazon Fire Stick, such as an Android TV box or a Google Chromecast device. What box would you suggest in the UK if Amazon fire stick are blocking third-party add-ons? I’m not that good at use stuff i follow you for everything i need to do

I am not having any problems with third party apps not working on my firestick. So I did the extended storage, all my apps are downloaded on to a memory stick. I guess for the blockade to work they have to be directly downloaded to the firestick.

Their motives should be fairly obvious…they are being pressured by MPAA, NAB, and others to put a stop to piracy.
