I had planned to use my Sandisk Cruzer Glide 3.0 256GB from my old shield but my new shield tv Pro will not allow it. No longer supported. A heating danger is what I have found to be the reason on androidtvnews website.
The same site recommends a SSD drive so is the drive’s R/W speed an important factor? What are other folks doing for added space? And what setup works best, as storage or system memory? I have been using an addon 4port USB 2 hub to connect storage, keyboard, and mouse. Am I bad to do this?

I have this one in my 2017 Shield Pro: SanDisk 256GB Ultra Fit USB 3.1 Flash Drive - SDCZ430-256G-G46, Black
SHIELD TV is compatible with the FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, and HFS+ file systems.
Here’s a pretty good article and does mention Nvidia taking off their “Recommended Drives” page.
I did have a storage stick a long time ago (around 2016) that overheated. Since then, I have always used the kind that I posted here. I have used the 126, 256, and 512 and have not had any issues.

Is it possible the difference between my ultra fit 3.0 and your MUF FIT Plus 3.1 is why yours works? Or is the slightly older Shield more friendly? I bought my Shield TV Pro on amazon prime days in July.
I honestly have no idea lol. But I have the 2019 shield pro and no issues.
I have a used the Sandisk 256 Ultra Fit 3.0 and 3.1 on my 2017 &2019 Shield with no issues.

On my Nvidia shield 2017 I installed a SanDisk SSD 1 TB. It will be a long time before I see the message “storage space critically low”
