To say I’m frustrated is a severe understatement. Here’s a quick history. Purchased Nvidia Shield Pro 3 years ago using a Samsung 65” TV and DirecTV box. Had minor issues but nothing major. Then, about 6 months ago we swapped out the Samsung with a LG 75” TV and it appears this is when everything went south BUT, not necessarily the cause. Could simply be a coincidence. There are too many scenarios and issues to list but the overall issue is, my Nvidia Shield Pro is almost impossible to start up normally. I try turning it on and it starts gyrating like it’s on Meth. I get screen pop-ups saying Input 1 then Input 2 and and back again over and over and over again!

I thought I’ve tried everything (Obviously I haven’t) troubleshooting each device independently, then together in pairs. When I think it’s resolved, it’s back to total anarchy.

If it sounds like I’m loosing it, I already have! I honestly don’t know what to do. I’ve also Factory Reset all three devices and I’m back to total anarchy.

One thing I believe may be contributing to all this is my HDMI-CEC settings. One article says “turn them all off”. The next says HCMI-CEC is the next coming of Jesus.

Does anyone have any suggestions or had the same issues (I hope not) and could possible give me some pointers or troubleshooting suggestions? I’m seriously thinking of dumping my Shield Pro at this time. I’m retired and it’s simply too stressful and time consuming. At night, my wife and I will sit down and attempt to enjoy a peaceful evening watching a movie and it ends up 15 minutes later with me wanting to throw something out the window! Seriously!

“Gyrating" as in physically moving? The only thing that could cause that is a loose fan. Did you buy this thing new in the box, or used from somewhere else? Has it collected an extreme amount of dust?

Fun read @BeagleLover ! I hope someone can help you. sorry for your frustration. Shield on Meth.

I just got an alert about this and thought of your post. No clue if it’s of use or not. Best wishes.

When I read this I had the thought of using the optical output, if indeed the Shield has one. If you use the optical & it works well, then you would know it’s somehow an HDMI-E-Arc problem. I have never owned a shield but this thought did come to mind.

How about trying another HDMI cable? A faulty one can cause all sorts of issues!

Bonne chance!!!

The “gyrating" is more concerning than your HDMI issue. But, that’s a simple explanation. Either you have a bad connection or your video output keeps turning on and off. There is nothing bad about CEC. What’s happening if CEC is on and this is occurring is that the video signal drops and your TV switches to another source. Then the signal comes back and the TV switches back to your Shield. Given that you’re having the other issues, I’d say your Shield is having trouble turning on and continuing to run. Possibly an overheating issue or some other internal problem. Could be a bad HDMI cord as well, but that wouldn’t explain the gyrating. I’m betting it’s clogged up with dust and causing issues with the fan, which is also preventing it from booting properly and continuing to run for long periods of time.

Hi Jayhawk, sorry for the late reply. Life got in the way! I don’t think it’s the fan. It’s not “physically” gyrating or moving. The pop-up notifications are gyrating all over the screen. As for dust build up, one of the articles I ran into online was a tutorial/instructions how to clean inside the Shield using blown air. I opened up the case, blew out the dust and also noted some (little) caked on dust. It’s all clean now. Thank you for the reply!

Hi Dena, I’ve never tried Meth but I can only imagine how my Shield would react on Meth.

Hi Informant, thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, the Shield does not have an Optical input. My TV does but not the Shield.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the clarification. Sounds like it’s definitely either the HDMI cord, HDMI port, or an internal component issue. Have you tried swapping out the cord and also plugging it into a different port on the TV?

I’ve had my Shield Pro’s for about 4 yrs, and the only time I’ve ever had problems with either of them was due to the HDMI cable. Right now I have the main one connected to a 1 in 3 out HDMI switch, which is also connected to a video over ethernet extender,( runs the Shield feed to 2 other TV’s upstairs) all running well. But at the start, I had to try 2 or 3 different HDMI cables before it would all work, even though the first one I used was the original cable. So maybe changing the cable could make a difference.

I had 2 shield boxes act up like this. Found out thru troubleshooting that the HDMI jacks on the shields were no longer snapping the cable in place. Took a rubber band and wrapped it around the cable then streched it around the shield. This worked for a long time.

Your welcome. Sounds like you have tried just about everything & reading what all you done I keep thinking maybe it’s the shield that is ailing as you seem to have tried all else. If you have another android tv device & hook it up to your LG will it run fine? If you hook up your shield to another tv in the house will it run fine that way? I know you said you tried troubleshooting each device independently, then in pairs, but I wonder exactly what all you tried. I hope you can isolate what is shall we say sick.

So it sounds like your box is jumping all over the place if I’m right . So I had an issue some what similar and I figured out when I shut the box off and the display is on any kind of resolution with a frame rate of 24 or below when I turn the box back on my screen is all over the place sometimes it’s going in-between menu screens all kind of crazy stuff . The fix is to manually change the resolution back to 1080 or 4k and frame rate back to 50 or 60 . This immediately stops to flickering any other crazy stuff the box might have been doing. So hopefully maybe this will help you out.

This is a problem with your LG TV. I bought a new LG C4 Oled and when I hooked up my Shield Pro it did the same thing you are describing, going back and forth between video 1 and 2. Unfortunately I can’t remember how I managed to “fix” the problem. I remember I went to the “home” screen where it shows your inputs and I just messed around with the tv from this screen and got it working.
I also have an Apple TV and and ONN Pro hooked up to the tv so you can see the fix is a little different. Just don’t panic your Shield is not going bad. I wish I could be more assistance.

I would get a test TV if you have a small Samsung. Or maybe a friend has a small Samsung. They can bring over and let you use for the day or for the night. Because it sound like it’s a TV issue compatibility. Or add a surround sound system.

I had the same issue. It was my sound bar had to disconnect and reconnect the cables several times. Eventually I upgraded my hdmi cable and the problem went away. Not saying this will fix it but worth a shot.

welcome
