just an idea.. haven’t dug through the internet and all the other forums yet.. but with google about to stop sideloading and all the problems with apps.. is there a way to maybe “root” one of these ONN boxes and go straight android without google? just a thought.

As someone who also uses ONN Boxes I would wait until Google actually stops sideloading before taking any action. IMO this is just a lot of talk on a forum about what might happen.

Entirely true. Until something actually happens everything is speculation, including our lives, but we do love our discussions and encourage any additional information that contributes to the topic.

If and when rooting Certified boxes becomes necessary, I’d bet that easier to follow instructions will surface.

While everyone has an opinion and is welcome to express it, here’s mine….I am a longtime user and BIG fan of Onn streaming boxes, and I applaud those doing these types of projects, they are not forcing anything on anybody nor are they asking for payment for their time and effort, so i’d rather have a tried and true solution to a potential problem in the wings, then to be caught empty handed when TSHTF, but that is just me….

Just as with fire sticks, if you’re going to wait until it’s already done, make sure to disable automatic updates. If they push an update that completely blocks everything, including the ability to root your device, then you’re screwed. This is why I still have a few fire sticks on old firmware that work flawlessly with all third party apps.

Good Morning @Jayhawks659 ….do you know a sure fire way to disable updates on the Onn 4K Pro, as i thought i had done that, and my Onn Pro stayed android 12 for quite a long while, while everyone else was getting the update, then bam, one day my box was updated ….Thanks in Advance….P.S. big fan of your vids and advice as well….

First Firesticks, now Onn boxes, guess stock android boxes will be the only way to go in the future to load whatever apps you desire. Guess I will have to start looking at a new stock android box as my MeCool KM7+ is a Google TV box. Why do all these companies want total control over your viewing preferences?

At this time, I do not know for sure. I can look into it sometime later if I have some free time. I have one around my house somewhere that I never use.

$$$ that’s what it all boils down to. The mpaa/nab/riaa want to control what you watch, how much you pay and how many ads you see. They put pressure on these device producers to reduce or stop piracy. They also have a lot of power via lobbyists to help sway the political powers that be.

i have a dozen diff boxes with android 7 thru 9 os on them that have never been opened and will never update to newer android os? i think i’m covered as you can’t even purchase these boxes now as they are no longer available to buy….those older android os boxes load 3rd party apps fine and they play 4k video great

Problem will be when apps stop working on older devices needing an update or newer apps are not supported.
Happened with Netflix, Hotstar etc apps - one day they will insist on an update to continue working

You forgot to add Jeff and Google who basically control the os
My guess is he (and a lot of us including me) is that we don’t use Netflix on these uncertified boxes. First off an app like Netflix does not play correctly on a stock box and 2nd and more importantly we get all the Netflix content and more from KODIO, Stremio, IPTV VOD, APK’s etc……
i have a shield,a couple of newer buzztv boxes and a couple of each of the 3 models of onn boxes….all new and unopened that i don;t currently use….just in case ….lol..no netflix or that type of apps…i get everything i need from iptv and smart tube

Agreed, my old Formuler Z7+ and Z8 pro work fine with android 7.
Z8 Pro setup on main tv and MYTVonline 2 setup for elderly parents.
Z7+ MYTVonline for Live IPTV / Tivimate for vods /tv series
Smart tube on both for ad free youtube

Worse case scenario, we buy a refreshed Formuler and use their EPG! I can live with that.
the regular onn boxes are $20 at walmart. I am gonna get one just to play with it and try out installing straight android on it. Mainly just to see if I can do it. I will post my results here. If anyone stumbles across any other videos or articles.. please share them here. What’s the point in having a good hobby if you don’t push the limits, right? lol
