You should be good to hook up the Onn. They paused the update until the kinks are fixed.

The Onn devices are going viral, especially in Canada, now that they’re available. They are around $70 CAD where the Google 2024 4K Pro on sale is around $20 more.

Has anyone tried connecting a VPN service (for geoblocking) directly through the APK (client) and run speed tests using Ookla?

The Google 2024 4K streamer doesn’t allow Ookla to be sideloaded and has several limitations too. I found inconsistent speeds.

I know some have recommended connecting to a VPN access point (Hotspot) or Control D or other premium DNS server. So I’m on the fence of the current line-up of Onn suits my needs.

I see them for $52.98 and $74.98 for the pro on Walmart.ca now. They were not there before. I don’t need one, I have three but it’s nice to know they are really here. I still wonder about the OS as I mentioned weeks ago.. Is it the same as the USA one that I have that gives me USA Tv, Stingray music etc, Google Freeplay etc when connected to a USA VPN.

Do the Onn 4K pro boxes that are available at Walmart Canada need a VPN for initial setup? Or are they region free?

Without even testing it, I would be dollars to donuts they do not. The ones from the USA did because of the OS. They cannot possibly sell these in Canada and expect people to even use a VPN. I was at Walmart today and looked to see if we had stock. We had all three, the Pro’s were totally sold out. I expect this to be ongoing for a long time and rightly so.

That was my thought too but wanted to make sure before buying. Thanks

You would need to see the packaging to see if it is different from US Onn
US Onn devices are locked and will not setup outside the country without a vpn

I would guess that Walmart would just include Canada during the setup as this would avoid making stock just for Canada

That is my thought as well but since they had to change the OS somewhat for Canada, I still wonder if they removed our ability to get the USA content that actually disappears when you use a VPN that is not the USA. At somepoint I will find out.

What USA content?

Content is from Google TV - so will use location to push content from Canada instead because US content would not have the right to stream outside US

In actual fact as I’ve mentioned a number of times, even the home screen changes dynamically if it thinks you’re not on a USA server. The Google Freeplay App disappears as well.

Many people in Canada and elsewhere aggressively promote using an Onn device with a VPN to access U.S. content. They are not merely suggesting it as an option but actively denying or deflecting the fact that for many users, this setup does not work or work for long with a VPN. I guess you can say they’re heavily glazing the Onn?

It works perfectly. 100% of the time. Never had problem on all three of my devices. I’ve never seen anyone else mention that in here in the last two years. I’ve been the only one saying the USA VPN gives you a different menu and addionition access that otherwise you don’t get.

Seems to be a new A14 update rolling out.

UR01.250.103.029.C!
.91GB
A14 update with update related bug fixes
Security Patch level update

Went smooth for me, but the other update did also.

Did you get notified or just did a Check for Updates?

Im a little hesitant even though my last update seemed fine.

I was notified of a remote update and after I did it, I checked, and it showed a system update. The last update went fine for me also, this one did seem to go quicker but I may be imagining it.

I decided to dive in and test it… downloading now.

Hi has anyone come across this … on my Onn 4K pro when I say hey google like the weather, it automatically turns my TV, how do I stop this

Thanks

There is a notification that 14 wants to be installed and directly after you will probably get a remote update as well.
